Looking for a Title for this Moody Painting!

Today's image, as yet untitled, is an experimental piece that I started a few weeks ago in my demo for the North Syracuse Art Guild.

I have been using these small paintings as warm-ups for my Adding Atmosphere to Your Paintings Workshops and Classes. (I'm also using this method with my Intro Classes at the Eye Studio).
We start with diagonal strokes in moody Payne's Gray mixed with assorted blues and greens, add a touch of yellow ochre and a sun/moon on sloppy wet paper and just let it all flow. After the paint dries we look for inspiration in the shapes left behind.
I've completed several of these pieces with landscape elements. This time I thought I would go for something a little different and added the stone walls leading into an ambiguous and somewhat spooky area.
If anyone can think of a good title I'm open for suggestions.

"Sentry"

"Falling"

"Falling Snow, Rising Moon"

I've included some of the other paintings that started in this same way with diagonal strokes and moody colors over a wet surface.

As you can see this method can take you in many different directions as you finish the piece.

In the painting "Sentry" I just added one of our herons from the lake and a suggestion of some sort of landform. "Falling" was finished after reading one of Rachael Ikins poems, and "Falling Snow, Rising Moon" became our holiday card image last year.

Tyler Art Gallery @ Oswego State Downtown Presents: Land, Sky, Water

Tyler Art Gallery @ Oswego State Downtown Presents:

Land, Sky, Water
Watercolor, Acrylic and Pastel
by Joan Applebaum

"The focus of this exhibit is on landscape - specifically on relationships between land, sky and water. I am intrigued by the drama of light and moisture mingling in the air creating those silvery spaces where land, sky and water connect, resulting in portrayal of atmosphere rather than of a specific scene. The unique characteristics and challenges of each medium (watercolor, acrylic and pastel) influence the final look of each painting." - Joan Applebaum

Joan Applebaum's colorful paintings of Upstate New York and its woodlands and waterways have been exhibited in galleries and shows throughout New York State.

In addition to being a working artist, Joan teaches during the summer months at the Thousand Islands Arts Center in Clayton. She maintains studios in her home base in East Syracuse and at her camp in Redwood.

Joan's exhibits have included solo shows at the Delavan Art Gallery, the Adirondack Centers for the Arts in Blue Mountain Lake and Old Forge, and the Community Arts Council Gallery in Utica and several locations in Syracuse and surrounding areas.

Art Meets Craft

What if you took all those really cool scrapbooking doodads and combined them with more traditional art materials? Like watercolor?  Or colored pencils? And then added some stamping, maybe a few "scrabble-type letters", some interesting glass tiles from the hardware store?
What would you get? Well I hope it would be art!

In our upcoming Spring Session at the YMCA Arts Studio I'm teaching a class on Wednesday mornings called Art Meets Craft. We will be working with collage and artist book ideas with a few crafty elements thrown into the mix as well. Watercolors, colored pencils and decorative papers (and the aforementioned doodads) will come out of the cabinets and onto the table in a grand mix as we put the elements and principles of design to work.

Pictured here are a couple of samples from the class which will meet for 6 consecutive Wednesdays 9:30 am - 11:30 am starting the first week in March. You can call the Y Arts Studio for more info: 315 637-2025 ext 216 or message me.

Hope to see you there. I'll bring the supplies, and the coffee. You bring the inspiration.
