Lots of Art with Intermittent Kayaking!

Wow! Where has the week gone???

It's Friday night already and I all can remember from Memorial Day Weekend and the following week is....lots of Art with Intermittent Kayaking!

Last Friday night I attended the opening reception for the Spring Show at the Sackets Harbor Arts Center, where I won first place for "Invitation", pictured above.

On Saturday and Sunday I participated in the 2015 Artists' Studio Tour Along the St. Lawrence River in the 1000 Islands and Surrounding Areas. I was the guest artist at The Lyric Coffeehouse in Clayton NY.

While at The Lyric I demonstrated watercolor...actually finished 3 paintings over the 2 -day event! I had lots of friends and relatives stop by to visit. Also quite a few people who had bought my paintings in other shows in the 1000 Islands area, stopped by to say hello.

All of the paintings shown at The Lyric that weekend were St. Lawrence River and Indian River Lakes scenes.

I was happy to sell quite a few prints and small framed pieces. My large original paintings were on display too, but they usually sell after after a customer has seen the work and then come back another time...or even two, to make sure they really want to buy. 

Hey What About the Kayaking???

After spending 2 days from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm painting and talking to customers, I was ready for a break. That's where the kayaking comes in! Luckily the rain held out till Monday, so I was able to paddle on Thursday, Friday (too tired on Saturday) Sunday and Monday before and after the rain. Also Tuesday morning.

I was also fortunate to have company that weekend who provided dinner for us on Saturday night. Thank you Beth, Randy and Rachael. (Randy is pictured with me above)

More Art (of course!)

Tuesday afternoon I worked my shift at Bay House Artisans in Alexandria Bay, (see related post below) and Wednesday back home to Syracuse to teach my Wednesday morning Drawing class at the Y. 

Wow what a whirlwind.

Fourth Annual Artists' Studio Tour May 23 and 24

FOURTH ANNUAL ARTISTS' STUDIO TOUR
Along the Beautiful St. Lawrence River in the 1000 Islands and Scenic Surrounding Areas

Wow! That's the longest title for any event I have ever been in! And I'm really excited to be a part of this tradition. In the 2013 tour I was one of the guest artists at Better Farm in Redwood, and what fun that was!

This year I am the guest artist at The Lyric Coffeehouse in Clayton, where I will be showing paintings which feature scenes from the Thousand Islands and Indian River Lakes. In addition to showing and hopefully selling work, I will be demonstrating watercolor throughout the 2 day event.

AND...here's a bonus...

At The Lyric you not only get to see artwork, you eat some delicious food too. ( I recommend the turkey panini )

There are approximately 27 artists in 17 locations participating in the 2015 Artists' Studio Tour. Locations include Redwood, Alexandria Bay, Wellesley Island, Clayton, Cape Vincent and Three Mile Bay. All types of art from decorative to functional will be represented in this event.

The Lyric Coffeehouse is located at 246 James St. in Clayton. I will be there from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm on Saturday May 23 and Sunday May 24.

It's nearly the end of April and snowing and I am not at all surprised. Winter of 2015 just does not want to let go!

But the good thing about bad weather means that I have more time in the studio. Lately I have been working with watercolor; mainly misty atmospheric techniques which I love. 

I've also been experimenting with some collage techniques in my watercolors to add an extra layer of atmosphere and texture.

I Just Realized I Had a Pretty Good Winter

Gratitudes

I am taking an online class in Art Marketing which includes daily gratitudes as part of the curriculum. So for the last few weeks I have begun each day listing the things that I am grateful for.

Now in Central New York we have had a miserable winter. In fact in Syracuse we have the dubious honor of having one of the 5 worst winters in America. So my list of gratitudes doesn't usually start with "I'm so grateful for the sun and warm weather". This morning as I was lying in bed listening to the snowplow scraping along the road and bouncing off mailboxes, my first gratitude of the day was "Yes!!! leftovers!!!! I don't have to cook tonight".

But, then I thought a little more and realized that I had quite a few things to be grateful for.

But don't worry, I'm not going to get all soppy and sentimental because this is an ART BLOG, so I'll be talking about art things.

Winter Art Shows

I participated in 3 Winter Art Shows: 

• Snowy Splendor at the Onondaga Historical Association in Syracuse 
• Winter Recipe at the Tech Garden in Syracuse 
• The Art of Winter at the Thousand Islands Arts Center in Clayton 

In the Art of Winter Show I won a Staff Pick Award for my "Cardinals!" and in Snowy Splendor I received a good review for "Leave Only Footprints" by Stars Magazine Art Critic Katherine Rushworth, and a photo of my work in the newspaper. The Winter Recipe Show was reviewed by New Times Critic Carl Mellor which resulted in another good review and a photo of my painting "Green Beer Parade" in the on-line version of that newspaper.

Coming Up Soon: Thousand Island Memorial Day Studio Tour

Back in January, I was invited by the Lyric Coffeehouse in Clayton to be their guest artist during the Thousand Island Studio tour May 23 and 24, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm. I will be there with paintings, prints cards etc and I plan also to do a watercolor demonstration. The Lyric is located at 246 James Street in Clayton NY.

So I just realized that I have had a pretty good winter.

New Directions

And here's a first for me: Yesterday I was asked to judge an art guild show. I have judged the National Scholastic Art Show for years, but this will be my first time judging "grown-ups".

So yeah, this winter hasn't been too bad here at Windy Hill Studio. Outside???A totally different story. Let's hope we can put away our winter boots till next November!

So Much Good News at Windy Hill Studio

It's been a great week here at Windy Hill Studio. I have so much good news to share. My watercolor "Cardinals" was awarded a Blue Ribbon for Staff Pick at the Art of Winter Show at the Thousand Islands Arts Center. Naturally I was thrilled.

I have two other pieces in the show: "Frozen World" a watercolor and "January Chill" a mixed media piece. Pictured here is "Frozen World". I know this is a familiar scene to year-round residents of the Islands.

While I was up in the Thousand Islands area I stopped by the Lyric Coffeehouse where I show and sell my artwork. The owner asked if I was interested in participating in the Thousand Islands Studio Tour and using her cafe as my "studio" for the event. Since my studio at camp is in a somewhat remote part of the Indian River Lakes, I jumped at the chance to be right in town where the action is. The Thousand Islands Studio Tour is a yearly event which involves artists and artisans from both sides (US and Canada) of the St. Lawrence River. For that weekend studios are open to the public so you can meet the artists, purchase art or commission a special piece just for your space. I am really looking forward to being part of this great event. A few years ago I participated using Better Farm as my "studio". Better Farm is an Arts, Education and sustainability Center just down the road from camp. I had such a great time meeting and greeting the local art lovers.

Another good bit of news was having The Healing Muse Cafe blog tweet my entire gallery page from their website! Yes!!! The Healing Muse is a literary and visual journal which comes from Upstate Medical Center for Bioethics and Humanities. I have been a contributor to their publication for 14 years.

And one more item…this one really took me by surprise. My son told me that a few of his friends would like to purchase my Grass Lakes Throughout the Year calendar. I had thought the calendar would only be of interest to lake people. Boy was I wrong. Gotta search my studio now for left-over calendars.
