Same Class, Two Locations!

I will be teaching a Pan Pastels Class in 2 locations this summer: the Thousand Islands Arts Center in Clayton and a YMCA class on location at Stone Quarry Hill Art Park in Cazenovia.

Both locations are fabulous. With the beautiful St.Lawrence River as a backdrop, the TI Arts Center presents opportunities to capture the effects of light on the water, and billowing clouds scooting across the sky. 

From atop the hill, Stone Quarry Hill Art Park in Cazenovia offers majestic vistas of the valley and dramatic skyscapes, not to mention sculptures and installations along the trails and on the hill.

Below is a description of the class
Pan Pastels have all the beauty and vibrant color of traditional pastels, but are a lot less messy! These soft, highly-pigmented colors are blended, layered and applied like paint. You will love the subtle way the colors blend as you capture light effects on the water and billowing clouds sweeping through the sky. There will be ample time to experiment with color blending techniques before you begin your painting. Pastels, paper or amper- sand board, applicators, and other pastel supplies will be provided.

Gimme Shelter!

Yes, It's Another Scene From the Lake!

This recently finished painting is based on one of my favorite boat shelters on the lake. Wait a minute, I think it's the only boat shelter on the lake! Everyone else just has a dock or they drag their boats up on the shore. 

I took some photo references for this when it was still early in the Spring. One of the boats is still tied up to the side of the shelter. The other boat is either inside or behind it hidden from view.

It was late in the day when I paddled by in my kayak. The stones at the base of the cliff are taking on their usual rosy evening glow. Even the wooden sides of the shelter and the roof are a warm orange-y hue. My kayak has stirred up a few ripples in the water, creating wavering lines which break up what would have been a mirror image in the water.

Loon calls in the distance. Time to paddle home to a campfire and s'mores.

This painting will be part of my Woodlands and Waterways show at the Sackets Harbor Arts Center August 1 - September 6.

What's On My Desk at Windy Hill Studio?

What's on my desk at Windy Hill Studio?

Paintings! Postcards! and Plans! to name a few things. As Spring draws to a close and Summer kicks into full gear I find myself with a desk loaded with works-in-progress, and lots of plans for the next few months.

Oh and yes, there's a often a sleepy cat napping in the middle of everything: Tony DiNozzo Applebaum (yes he is named for the fictional NCIS agent) He's not much help in the studio but he seems to appreciate art.

I have 3 recently completed watercolors; Heading Home is pictured above. Some of the best views of our lake are from the vantage point of the kayaks. I took the photo reference for this piece as Rich and I were rounding the last bend on our way back to camp after an early evening paddle. The towering cliffs were just beginning to take on their rosy evening glow.

The other watercolors, a floral and a river scene are awaiting matts and frames. The floral "Red, White and Blue" is pictured below.

Acrylics too!

I also have a couple of acrylic paintings in progress: a still life of an old baseball glove and another version of our rosy evening cliffs on the lake. Images of those will be posted when they are done.
The baseball glove is earmarked for the Baseball Show coming up in Syracuse in August.

Postcards

The postcards are for my upcoming show "Woodlands and Waterways" at the Sackets Harbor Arts Center in August. Opening reception is August 1, 1:00 - 4:00.

Plans???

Always! I have had a couple of interesting offers for shows and partnering. It's all still in the planning stages now, so not much to tell just yet, except that the partnering would be with Syracuse Stage and the show will be at one of the SUNY Oswego Galleries in 2016.

One definite show is scheduled for December 2015 at the Unitarian/Universalist Church in Auburn.
And I'm on the planning committee for a big art/craft show scheduled for June 2016!

Can't Forget Lesson Plans

And of course there are lesson plans. Yep, I'm teaching art camp again this summer at Stone Quarry Hill Art Park. And also an adult class at Stone Quarry: Painting Land, Sky and Water in Pan Pastels. I will also be teaching the Pan Pastels class at the Thousand Islands Arts Center, as well as a Watercolor Class.

Plans???   Always.

Lots of Art with Intermittent Kayaking!

Wow! Where has the week gone???

It's Friday night already and I all can remember from Memorial Day Weekend and the following week is....lots of Art with Intermittent Kayaking!

Last Friday night I attended the opening reception for the Spring Show at the Sackets Harbor Arts Center, where I won first place for "Invitation", pictured above.

On Saturday and Sunday I participated in the 2015 Artists' Studio Tour Along the St. Lawrence River in the 1000 Islands and Surrounding Areas. I was the guest artist at The Lyric Coffeehouse in Clayton NY.

While at The Lyric I demonstrated watercolor...actually finished 3 paintings over the 2 -day event! I had lots of friends and relatives stop by to visit. Also quite a few people who had bought my paintings in other shows in the 1000 Islands area, stopped by to say hello.

All of the paintings shown at The Lyric that weekend were St. Lawrence River and Indian River Lakes scenes.

I was happy to sell quite a few prints and small framed pieces. My large original paintings were on display too, but they usually sell after after a customer has seen the work and then come back another time...or even two, to make sure they really want to buy. 

Hey What About the Kayaking???

After spending 2 days from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm painting and talking to customers, I was ready for a break. That's where the kayaking comes in! Luckily the rain held out till Monday, so I was able to paddle on Thursday, Friday (too tired on Saturday) Sunday and Monday before and after the rain. Also Tuesday morning.

I was also fortunate to have company that weekend who provided dinner for us on Saturday night. Thank you Beth, Randy and Rachael. (Randy is pictured with me above)

More Art (of course!)

Tuesday afternoon I worked my shift at Bay House Artisans in Alexandria Bay, (see related post below) and Wednesday back home to Syracuse to teach my Wednesday morning Drawing class at the Y. 

Wow what a whirlwind.

Fourth Annual Artists' Studio Tour May 23 and 24

FOURTH ANNUAL ARTISTS' STUDIO TOUR
Along the Beautiful St. Lawrence River in the 1000 Islands and Scenic Surrounding Areas

Wow! That's the longest title for any event I have ever been in! And I'm really excited to be a part of this tradition. In the 2013 tour I was one of the guest artists at Better Farm in Redwood, and what fun that was!

This year I am the guest artist at The Lyric Coffeehouse in Clayton, where I will be showing paintings which feature scenes from the Thousand Islands and Indian River Lakes. In addition to showing and hopefully selling work, I will be demonstrating watercolor throughout the 2 day event.

AND...here's a bonus...

At The Lyric you not only get to see artwork, you eat some delicious food too. ( I recommend the turkey panini )

There are approximately 27 artists in 17 locations participating in the 2015 Artists' Studio Tour. Locations include Redwood, Alexandria Bay, Wellesley Island, Clayton, Cape Vincent and Three Mile Bay. All types of art from decorative to functional will be represented in this event.

The Lyric Coffeehouse is located at 246 James St. in Clayton. I will be there from 10:00 am - 5:00 pm on Saturday May 23 and Sunday May 24.

Bay House Artisans: a One of a Kind Delight in Alexandria Bay

Opening Day May 8....Come On In!

"Mmmm....it smells so good in here." That's usually the first thing anyone says as they enter Bay House Artisans. The smells of essential oils and herbs mixes with mellow music by Willie Nelson or Cowboy Junkies. Beautiful hand-made jewelry, pottery and sculpture line the shelves. The walls are filled with paintings and photographs depicting scenes from the St. Lawrence River and surrounding areas. Yes, Bay House Artisans, now in their fourth year of operation, is a one-of-a-kind delight in Alexandria Bay.

Regional Artists and Artisans

Bay House Artisans is a co-op made up of approximately 30 artists and artisans living and working either full time or part-time in the North Country. The shop is staffed by members of the co-op so while browsing through Bay House you will have an opportunity to chat with the artisan on duty that day. 

Special Events

Bay House has some special events planned for the summer including several "Art Walks" throughout the summer months. The Soldiers Art Show will be held on June 17 - 18 and

Pirate Week Activities for kids will be back again in August. 

Hours

Bay House Artisans is open Monday - Thursday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm, Fridays and Saturdays 10:00 am - 9:00 pm and Sundays 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. Hours will change as we get closer to summer; the store will be open each day till 9:00 pm.

Location

You can't miss it! We are right in the center of Alexandria Bay, the Heart of the Thousand Islands! Ok, I'll be more specific. It's the quaint old white house located at 21 James St. (the main street with all the shops)

Spring Triumphant!

Spring Triumphant!

On Wednesday I posted a photo on Facebook of a painting in progress. I was doing a hallway demo at the Y to attract people to our art programs...yup I'm just a big distraction out there in the hall!

I later finished the piece in my studio at home, as the snow was flying outside. The flowers and the warm background colors really helped to take the chill off the unseasonably cold week.

Shown here is the finished piece, titled Spring Triumphant.

I will be teaching an acrylic painting class on Monday nights 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at the Y Arts Studio, East Area Family YMCA in Fayetteville, NY

The class begins on May 4. You can call the Y at 315 637-2025 ext 216 for more information regarding registration. All supplies are included in the reasonable class fee and the class is open to YMCA members and non-members.
